Middle School Grade 7 Curriculum

English

Students use word origins and historical/literary knowledge to determine meaning, including idioms, analogies, metaphors, and similes. They apply Greek, Latin, and Anglo-Saxon roots and affixes to understand vocabulary. In comprehension, they connect ideas and perspectives using text structure and purpose. Grade 7 students read a variety of print and digital sources, locate information in public and workplace documents, and analyze an author’s argument, point of view, plot events, and characterization. They also respond to important historical and cultural texts. In writing, students produce clear, focused essays with introductions, evidence, and conclusions. They write narrative, expository, persuasive, and descriptive texts of 500–700 words while following standard conventions. Additionally they deliver organized formal presentations. Grade 7 standards include conducting research from multiple sources, evaluating credibility, analyzing arguments and evidence, using transitions for clear writing flow. This includes using technology to publish and cite sources.

Mathematics

Students revise arithmetic operations with integers, and rational numbers, practice algebraic expressions and solve different problems with expressions and equations, write, graph, and solve inequalities, learn and solve different problems with ratios, rates, and proportions, continue their study in percents through e.g. comparison, proportions, discounts, markups, simple interest etc., learn about constructions and scale drawings with triangles and quadrilaterals, solve problems with perimeters/circumferences and areas of circles, and composite figures, study about surface area and volume of different figures, and study various topics in probability and statistics.

Social Studies

In 7th grade students study the social, cultural and technological changes that occurred in Europe, Africa and Asia from 500 ad-1789. Students will review how archaeologists and historians uncover the past. They study great civilizations that developed concurrently throughout the world during the medieval and early modern periods.

Science

Seventh-grade students follow a similar path to sixth graders; their program involves topics in Life Sciences, Earth and Space Systems (ESS), Physical Sciences, and Engineering, Technology, and Applications of Science (ETS). Life Science topics include Matter and Energy in Organisms and Ecosystems, and Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems. ESS covers topics in the History of Earth, Earth’s Systems, and Human Impacts. Physical Sciences topics include Structure and Properties of Matter and Chemical Reactions. For ETS students, the course will cover the Engineering Design Process, compare different solutions, analyze data, and apply these skills for various purposes in accordance with previously studied material.

Art

Process, analyze, respond to art, understand art in historical and cultural dimension, create art using different media.

Music

Grade 7 students are able to learn a string instrument and subsequently deepen their music theory study and focus on learning proper tone production.
Grade 7 students enjoy music through singing, dancing and playing both games and instruments. Reading music and following the conductor are essential skills.

Physical Education

Students learn about fitness and its benefits through studying and participating in a wide range of physical activities. Activities include team games (ball handling and fundamental skill development), individual sports (gymnastics, swimming, surfing, tennis and dance) and fitness (circuit training, stretching and warm-up exercises).

Additional Languages ( i.e.French/Spanish/German/Hebrew )

Every student whose academic standards allow an additional language, have the choice of French, Spanish, German or Hebrew. (Minimum amount of children needed.)
The middle school additional language program aims to develop and improve comprehension, expression and grammar. Vocabulary, grammar and research are integrated into the program according to the student’s level. Students learn about customs through cultural activities.

Mandarin

All Grade 7 students are required to take Mandarin with Additional Languages (French/Spanish/German/Hebrew) also being offered in Grade 7.

This course introduces students to standard Mandarin Chinese language and is designed for students with little to no prior knowledge of spoken or written Mandarin. Students in this course focus on learning essential vocabulary, practicing pronunciation, and understanding simple grammatical structures. This knowledge prepares students to effectively communicate in Mandarin on a limited range of topics related to everyday situations. Students practice listening and speaking in real-life situations, learn to read and write Chinese characters, and examine how culture and language interact in China. In-class activities and course assignments aim to assist students as they develop the oral proficiency and confidence necessary to initiate simple conversations.

Technology

Middle school students learn about computer science fundamentals and Discoveries. Students are introduced to HTML and fundamentals of object-oriented programing language to learn how to code computer programs, games and websites. To develop problem-solving skills through engaging challenges. They study how to build their own websites, apps, animations, games, and physical computing systems. Our students are able to create authentic artifacts and engage with computer science as a medium for creativity, communication, problem solving, and fun. Our students explore the world of Microsoft Office applications as essential tools to help with common computer tasks and streamline workflows. Through our media sessions, our students learn how to create and edit podcasts and videos for creative projects.
