Middle School Grade 6 Curriculum

English & Language Arts

Students read aloud with fluency, accuracy, expression, intonation, and pacing while recognizing word origins, foreign words in English, and multiple-meaning words. In comprehension, they analyze key ideas, arguments, and perspectives using text structure and organization. They create outlines, summaries, and notes. They also identify persuasion, and unsupported claims as they analyze characters, setting, symbolism, imagery, metaphor, tone, and speaker. In writing, students produce multi-paragraph narratives, expository pieces, research reports, responses to literature, and persuasive compositions. They revise for clarity and organization. They also give oral presentations, including informative, narrative, persuasive, and problem-solution formats. Grade 6 standards include developing claims with evidence, organizing ideas logically, and conducting short research projects from multiple sources. They use text features like headings, charts, and graphics to improve understanding.

Mathematics

Students learn about numerical expressions and factors, arithmetic operations with fractions and decimals, study about algebraic expressions and properties, work with areas of polygons, find, compare, and use ratios, rates, and percents, work with integers, absolute value, and the coordinate plane, write and solve equations and inequalities, solve problems with surface area and volume of different figures, work with statistical measures through measures of center and variation, find, compare, and solve questions with different data displays.

Social Studies

Grade 6 students develop historical and social science analysis skills by studying ancient civilizations and the people/events that shaped them. They explore early human development from the Paleolithic era to the agricultural revolution and examine civilizations such as Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Kush. Students also study Egyptian art and architecture, the role of trade, and the development of language and writing systems. They learn about Ancient Greece, including its trade, government, mythology, and contributions to art and science, as well as the Persian Empire and early civilizations of India, China, and Rome.

Science

The sixth-grade program involves topics in Life Sciences, Earth and Space Systems (ESS), Physical Sciences, and Engineering, Technology, and Applications of Science (ETS). Life Science topics Structure, Function, and Information Processing, and Growth, Development, and Reproduction of Organisms. ESS covers topics in Earth’s Systems, Weather and Climate, and Human Impacts. Physical Sciences topics include exploration in Energy e.g. temperature changes, thermal energy transfer etc. For ETS students, the course will cover the Engineering Design Process, compare different solutions, analyze data, and apply these skills for various purposes in accordance with previously studied material.

Art

Students will identify and describe all the elements of art. (color, line, shape, texture, space, value) , they describe how balance is used, apply the rules of two point perspective use various tints, shade, and intensities use technology to create original works of art. Research the role of visual arts in selected periods of history, compare designs from at least two selected cultures, research how art was used in theatrical productions past and present, select works of art for an exhibition.

Music

Grade 6 students are able to learn a string instrument and subsequently deepen their music theory study and focus on learning proper tone production.
Grade 6 students enjoy music through singing, dancing and playing both games and instruments. Reading music and following the conductor are essential skills.

Physical Education

Working in groups, being leaders and followers, rights of others, fairness, rule compliance, speed accuracy, skill development, baseball, volleyball, soccer, track, swimming, tennis, and surfing.

Additional Languages ( i.e.French/Spanish/German/Hebrew )

Every student whose academic standards allow an additional language, have the choice of French, Spanish, German or Hebrew. (Minimum amount of children needed.)
The middle school additional language program aims to develop and improve comprehension, expression and grammar. Vocabulary, grammar and research are integrated into the program according to the student’s level. Students learn about customs through cultural activities.

Technology

Middle school students learn about computer science fundamentals and Discoveries. Students are introduced to HTML and fundamentals of object-oriented programing language to learn how to code computer programs, games and websites. To develop problem-solving skills through engaging challenges. They study how to build their own websites, apps, animations, games, and physical computing systems. Our students are able to create authentic artifacts and engage with computer science as a medium for creativity, communication, problem solving, and fun. Our students explore the world of Microsoft Office applications as essential tools to help with common computer tasks and streamline workflows. Through our media sessions, our students learn how to create and edit podcasts and videos for creative projects.
