Elementary School Grade 5 Curriculum
Personal and Social Education
T.H.I.S students develop an awareness of their self-identity, strengths and weaknesses. They learn to recognize, communicate and manage their own feelings, reflect on their abilities and behavior and set achievable personal goals. Grade 5 students learn about changes and discuss appropriate conflict choices, learn about individuals or groups who have significantly influenced other individuals or societies.
Language
Mathematics
Students learn and practice place value concepts, numerical expressions, add and subtract decimals, multiply and divide whole numbers, multiply and divide decimals, add and subtract fractions, multiply and divide fractions, convert and display units of measure, explore patterns in the coordinate plane, understand volume, and classify two-dimensional shapes.

Social Studies
Grade 5 students trace the routes of early explores and describe early explorations. They research topics as rights and different types of governments. They learn about the first colonies of the English, Spanish, French and Dutch. They learn about people and events associated with the American Revolution and analyse its significance.
Science
Fifth grade science covers matter and energy in ecosystems, space systems, Earth systems, properties of matter, and engineering design. Students learn how matter is composed, how it changes, and that it is conserved. This includes studies of mixtures and substances. They model how Earth’s systems (geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere) interact and analyze data about water distribution on Earth. Students also learn that plants get materials for growth mainly from air and water. They model how matter and energy move through plants, animals, decomposers, and the environment. Understanding how energy in food is originally coming from the sun. In space science, they study patterns such as day and night, seasonal star movement, and changes in shadows.

Art
Students will study; unity and harmony I composition, learn characteristics of representational , non-representational and abstract art, use one point perspective, make contour observational drawings, develop skills in digital imagery, make abstract compositions based on real objects, use mixed media in 2 dimensional composition, learn how galleries and museums contribute to art conservation, ID fine art, folk art, traditional art from different periods of history, research and report on various types of artist.
Music
Grade 5 students are able to learn a string instrument and subsequently deepen their music theory study and focus on learning proper tone production.
Grade 5 students enjoy music through singing, dancing and playing both games and instruments. Reading music and following the conductor are essential skills.
Physical Education
Working in groups, being leaders and followers, rights of others, fairness, rule compliance, speed accuracy, skill development, baseball, volleyball, soccer, track, swimming, tennis, and surfing
Additional Languages ( i.e.French/Spanish/German/Hebrew )
Every student whose academic standards allow an additional language, have the choice of French, Spanish, German or Hebrew. (Minimum amount of children needed.)
The lower school additional language program aims to develop and improve comprehension, expression and grammar. Vocabulary, grammar and research are integrated into the program according to the student’s level. Students learn about customs through cultural activities.
