Elementary School Grade 1 Curriculum

Personal and Social Education

T.H.I.S students develop an awareness of their self-identity, strengths and weaknesses. They learn to recognize, communicate and manage their own feelings: reflect on their abilities and behavior: and set achievable personal goals. Grade 1 students study the views of others and the importance of respecting these views.

Language

Grade 1 students develop their listening, speaking, reading, writing, and observational skills by exploring meaningful topics and materials, building language abilities at their own pace while continuing to refine them throughout the Lower School years. In Language Arts, they learn to recognize the features of a sentence, distinguish between long and short vowel sounds in single-syllable words, read grade-level texts with purpose and understanding, and write both opinion pieces and informative or explanatory texts.

Mathematics

Grade 1 students work with different addition and subtraction situations, gain fluency and strategies for arithmetic operations within 10, learn how to add and subtract numbers within 20, count and write numbers to 120, compare two-digit numbers, add and subtract tens, add two-digit numbers, measure and compare lengths, represent and interpret data, tell time, identify, compare, and create two- and three-dimensional shapes, and work with equal shares.

Social Studies

Grade 1 students study individuals, groups and how they interact with each other: how items and activities have changed over time and how communities provide for their members. Our Grade 1 students learn of rights and responsibilities, fair play, good sportsmanship and respect for the rights and opinions of others. Students learn of geography and economy. Learn of symbols, icons and songs.

Science

Throughout their studies, students learn about the relationship between sound and vibrating materials, as well as the connection between light availability and the ability to see objects. They investigate how light travels from place to place through experiments with different materials placed in the path of a beam of light. Students understand how plants and animals use their environment to survive, grow, and meet their needs, as well as how parental and offspring behaviors help young survive. They gain insight into the similarities among young plants, animals, and humans. Our grade 1 students observe, describe, and predict patterns of object movement in the sky through various situations and analyses.

Art

Grade 1 students use a wide variety of art materials, tools and media, and are encouraged to use the environment and their imagination in their work. Students have art lesson once a week. Grade 1 art work is often connected to Units of Inquiry.

Music

Grade 1 students learn to enjoy music through singing, dancing and playing both games and instruments. They begin to read, create and experience music and are exposed to simple rhythms and melodies. Students also perform for others. Grade 1 students learn to play the recorder.

Physical Education

Grade 1 students do a variety of activities, including dance, fitness, coordination training and cooperative games, on a range of equipment. Students learn abut teamwork, balance, agility, action and reaction. Grade 1 students have one 60-minute P.E. session per week and one 60 minutes session of tennis.

Additional Languages ( i.e.French/Spanish/German/Hebrew )

Every student whose academic standards allow an additional language, have the choice of French, Spanish, German or Hebrew. (Minimum amount of children needed.)
The lower school additional language program aims to develop and improve comprehension, expression and grammar. Vocabulary, grammar and research are integrated into the program according to the student’s level. Students learn about customs through cultural activities.

Technology

Our elementary school students are introduced to the world of computer programming. Learning concepts such as algorithms & a block-based integrated development environment (IDE). Elementary school students learn of foundational computer science concepts and explore how technology impacts our world. Students learn programming basics, collaboration, and critical thinking through topics like the internet, games, animation, art, and app design, using interactive projects and game creation. Our students learn how to build imaginative and fun projects. They explore the world of Microsoft Office applications as essential tools to help with common computer tasks and streamline workflows. Through our media sessions, our students learn how to create and edit podcasts and videos for creative projects.
